The Power of Backing Yourself

Written by  | 11th June 2026

One thing spirit brings through in my readings time and time again is this: You are the captain of your own ship. Not your family. Not your partner. Not your friends. Not society. You.

And yet so many of us second-guess ourselves when it comes to making decisions, especially the big ones. We wait for permission. We look for reassurance. We hope someone else will validate what we already feel deep down inside. I understand that. Truly. Because making a decision with certainty can feel incredibly vulnerable, especially when other people don’t understand it. There’s a particular kind of loneliness that can come with choosing yourself. With trusting your intuition over outside opinions. With walking a path that doesn’t make sense to anyone else yet.

But one of the deepest spiritual lessons I’ve learned is this: certainty doesn’t always arrive as loud confidence. Sometimes it arrives as a quiet knowing you can’t ignore. And part of growth is learning to honour that knowing.

So many people come to readings wanting to know if they’re making the “right” choice. Should they leave the relationship? Change careers? Move cities? Speak up? Walk away? Start over? And while guidance from spirit can absolutely help illuminate the energy around a situation, the purpose of a reading - at least for me - has never been to hand someone their life decisions. It’s to place them back into their own seat of power. Because we always have a choice. Even in situations where options feel limited, we still get to choose how we respond. We get to choose our mindset. Our boundaries. Our next step. Our willingness to stay or go. Our willingness to betray ourselves or honour ourselves. That’s power.

I think sometimes we imagine certainty means never doubting ourselves. But actually, certainty can coexist with fear. You can be terrified and still know what you need to do. You can shake while making the decision. You can cry while closing the door. Courage isn’t the absence of uncertainty - it’s choosing yourself despite it. And not everyone will understand your choices. That can be one of the hardest parts.

Sometimes people project their fears onto you because your bravery highlights where they’ve abandoned themselves. Sometimes they genuinely love you but can’t see the vision you’re being called towards. Sometimes they’re attached to the version of you that felt more convenient, more predictable, more familiar. But your soul’s path was never meant to be crowd-approved.

There have been moments in my own life where I’ve had to make decisions that made absolutely no sense to other people - decisions that looked risky, emotional, irrational, or unrealistic from the outside. But spirit kept nudging me forward, and deep down, I knew I would regret abandoning myself far more than I’d regret taking the leap. That inner relationship with yourself is everything. Because at the end of the day, you are the one who has to live your life. You are the one who has to sit with the consequences of staying silent when your soul wanted to speak. You are the one who feels the heaviness when something is no longer aligned.

Backing yourself is a spiritual practice. It’s choosing to trust that your intuition exists for a reason. It’s allowing your inner voice to matter. It’s deciding that your truth deserves space, even if it makes other people uncomfortable. And no, that doesn’t mean we won’t make mistakes. We’re human. Sometimes we’ll choose things that lead to lessons instead of outcomes we hoped for. But even then, spirit has shown me repeatedly that nothing is wasted. Every choice teaches us something. Every experience shapes us. The important thing is that the choice was yours.

There’s something incredibly empowering about reaching a point where you stop needing universal approval before making a move. Where you stop outsourcing your authority. Where you begin saying: “I trust myself enough to handle what comes next.” That’s freedom.

So if you’re standing at a crossroads right now, wondering whether to trust yourself, let this be your reminder: You do not need everyone else to understand your path in order for it to be valid. Sometimes the most life-changing decisions begin with a quiet inner whisper that says, This matters to me. This feels true for me. This is the direction I need to go. Listen to that voice. Spirit will guide you. But you are still the one holding the wheel. You got this. Trust yourself. Sarah xxxx
