Why the Tower Card Is Not One to Fear
Some Tarot cards can really freak people out when they pop up, and The Tower is definitely one of those.
With its intense images of lightning, fire, and folks tumbling from a crumbling tower, it doesn’t look very comforting at all. If you’ve had The Tower show up in a reading, you probably found yourself thinking, “What disaster is coming my way?”
But here’s the thing: I don’t think you need to panic when you see The Tower.
Sometimes, it actually marks a crucial turning point in your life.
What Does the Tower Really Mean?
So, what’s The Tower really about?
It’s all about disruption, revelations, and sudden changes.
Something in your life that seemed solid might get shaken up, or you might find out something that changes your perspective entirely.
Yeah, that sounds pretty scary, but there’s an essential aspect of The Tower that people often miss.
It usually doesn’t tear down something that was genuinely solid; instead, it reveals what wasn’t as stable as you thought.
Maybe you’ve been stuck in a relationship that just isn’t working anymore, or you’re hanging onto a job you’ve outgrown because the idea of leaving feels too daunting.
Perhaps you’re clinging to a friendship or a plan just because it’s familiar.
Then suddenly, something happens that makes it impossible to keep pretending everything is okay.
That’s the energy of The Tower.
The Tower Can Bring the Truth
I like to think of The Tower as a truth-teller.
Often, we can feel that something needs to change, but we’re just not ready to admit it.
We might ignore the warning signs, rationalize our issues, or convince ourselves things will get better on their own.
Then The Tower comes along and forces you to confront reality—yeah, it might be uncomfortable, but it’s also super valuable because it gives you the chance to make different choices.
You can’t rebuild if you don’t first see what’s not working.
The Tower Doesn't Always Mean Disaster
Now, another common misconception is that The Tower means a complete disaster is coming.
Not necessarily!
Sometimes, the disruption it brings is pretty minor but still emotionally significant.
You could suddenly have a change of heart about something, hear unexpected news in a conversation, or have plans that fall apart only for better opportunities to pop up.
The other cards around it and the context of the question matter a ton.
This is why I think it’s not a great idea to look at individual Tarot cards in isolation.
A Tarot reading is like a story unfolding.
What Comes After the Tower?
What’s even cooler is what comes right after The Tower in the Major Arcana: The Star.
After the chaos, there’s hope.
The Star represents healing, renewal, and the ability to envision something brighter.
That sequence is really important.
Sometimes, life has to break apart what doesn’t fit before you can see what should take its place.
Think back on moments in your life that felt like disasters at first but ultimately pushed you in a direction you never would have chosen otherwise.
Ending a relationship might lead you to a healthier one, losing out on an opportunity might guide you toward something that suits you better, and uncovering an uncomfortable truth could save you from wasting years on an illusion.
Even if you wouldn’t have chosen the disruption willingly, you can still choose what you build afterward.
Don't Fear Difficult Tarot Cards
Tarot isn’t meant to scare you.
Cards like The Tower, Death, the Devil, or Ten of Swords might look intimidating, but they shouldn’t automatically be seen as doom-and-gloom predictions.
I see Tarot as a way to understand the vibes, patterns, and possibilities of a situation.
Sometimes the cards affirm what you’ve already sensed.
Other times, they highlight something you haven’t thought about, or encourage you to see things from a totally different angle.
Even tough cards can offer solid advice.
So, if The Tower shows up next time you have a reading, don’t jump to the worst conclusion.
Instead, ask yourself:
"What truth is trying to come to light?"
"What structure in my life isn’t working anymore?"
"And what can I potentially build afterward?"
The Tower might shake things up, but sometimes that shake-up is exactly what’s needed to make way for something stronger to emerge.
