Why Every Medium Needs to Learn How to Switch Off

Why Every Medium Needs to Learn How to Switch Off

One of the questions I’m asked more than almost any other is, “Marcus, how do you switch off?” It’s a brilliant question because so many people assume that mediums are connected to the spirit world every minute of every day. The reality is very different. Just like any other profession, there has to be balance. Knowing when to connect is important, but knowing when to disconnect is just as essential.

For me, switching off begins with a conscious decision. At the end of every reading or demonstration, I thank the spirit world for their love, guidance, and the privilege of working with them. I then take a few quiet moments to ground myself. I imagine roots growing from my feet deep into the earth, allowing any excess energy to flow safely away. As I breathe deeply, I visualise a beautiful light surrounding me, knowing I am grounded, safe, protected, and fully present in my own energy once again. This simple practice reminds both me and the spirit world that the work is complete and that it's now time to return to everyday life.

Many people believe that being a medium means constantly seeing or hearing spirit. In my experience, that simply isn’t true. Spirit respects boundaries. They understand we have lives to live, families to spend time with, and moments where we simply need to rest. Creating healthy boundaries not only protects your energy but also keeps your connection clear and strong when it’s time to work again.

One of my favourite ways to switch off is by spending time in nature. Whether it’s walking through the countryside, sitting beside the sea, or simply enjoying a quiet moment in the garden, nature has an incredible way of grounding our energy. It reminds us to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with ourselves. The natural world has its own peaceful rhythm, and when we tune into it, we often find our own balance returning.

I also believe in embracing everyday life. Watch a film, listen to music, cook your favourite meal, laugh with friends, or spend quality time with your family. These moments are not distractions from your spiritual journey—they are part of it. We are here to experience life fully, and the happiest mediums are often those who know how to enjoy the simple things.

Breathing and mindfulness can also help throughout the day. If you ever feel overwhelmed, pause for a few moments. Close your eyes, take slow, deep breaths, and picture yourself surrounded by peaceful, golden light. Let any stress or emotional heaviness drift away with each exhale. You don't need complicated rituals—sometimes the simplest practices are the most powerful.

Above all, remember that self-care is not selfish. You cannot give your best to others if you are running on empty. Taking time to recharge allows you to serve with more compassion, clarity, and confidence. Spirit wants you to enjoy your own life just as much as you help others heal through theirs. Learning to switch off isn't turning your back on your gift—it's honouring it. By grounding yourself, setting loving boundaries, and trusting that you are safe, protected, and supported, you allow your connection with the spirit world to remain healthy, balanced, and filled with love for many years to come. Love Always, Marcus
