The Fool

Written by  | 24th January 2016
The Fool card is usually seen as the first card of the Major Arcana in Tarot decks- the Major Arcana is often seen as the Fool's journey through life, with the other cards the archetypes in life that we will experience. The Fool is a call to adventure and usually indicates the beginning of a journey. This could be literally, or your life could be about to go in a new direction.

This doesn't mean we know what's going to happen next or how things will unfold; it may well indicate a time of confusion and indecision as we work out what's going on and what we're going to do next. At the beginning of this journey we have unlimited potential, anything could happen. It is a time of innocence as everything is still new, and also a time of risk taking as you may not know yet what you're getting into. The Fool is often seen as living life to the full, having adventures and being creative. It is the urge we get to start new projects and to set new goals for ourselves to achieve. It represents new experiences, personal growth and development. We may well need to take a leap of faith and trust it will all work out for the best though as at this point it can be hard to see where it is leading and if it will play out the way we want it to.

I often think of the Fool as experiencing life through a child's perspective. Everything is shiny, new and exciting. Rather than thinking about what can't be done (or even if it is possible to do it), a child will just get on with it and try, even if they aren't able to succeed in the long run. They have a much shorter perspective rather than looking to the long term, and will rarely worry about whether it will work out or not.

If we have a new idea or project on the horizon, this card advises us to go for it with plenty of energy and enthusiasm. It doesn't guarantee success, but it always makes me think that it is better to have tried and failed than not to have tried at all. It is a card reminding us to enjoy what we are doing rather than stressing about if it will succeed, and trying to look at life through the eyes of a child in a positive way with fun and excitement.
