New beginnings
Easter, commonly seen as the Christian Holy-day, celebrates the bringer of life, renewal of life and rebirth of our Lord Jesus Christ, promising eternal life. I find this time of year invigorating with the fresh awakening of lighter mornings where you can sit soaking up that first blast of the sun’s rays as it rises and banishes the dark, absorbing its positive energies and connecting to your higher self with the help of its natural powers.
It offers so much in the way of fertility and new life from flowers starting to bloom, buds opening to share their wonderful colours with the world and animals being born. We associate all this with the birth of Jesus; however, the roots of Easter start with more spiritual practices relating to the Saxon goddess of fertility. So, whilst Easter has always been seen as a bringer of new life our practices and celebrations have changed through the times. Much of the celebrations were done outside appreciating nature's gifts, giving back to the earth and sowing seeds, also giving thanks to the sun for its new awakened power.
Easter Eggs & Bunnies
Eggs have always been a recognisable symbol of Easter, During Saxon times people would decorate these eggs with colour and patterns and decorate with petals from flowers to show their gratitude in Spring bringing new life and appreciation of fertility and eating eggs during Lent was forbidden and they would then resume eating eggs on Easter Sunday, hence the new tradition of tucking into a milk chocolate egg on Easter Sundays becoming the new treat. Many people struggle to make the connection between Easter and the Easter bunny, however seeing as Bunnies generally come out of hibernation in Spring and breed so quickly and so many they were seen as a symbol of fertility.
Renewal and hope are the biggest practice of all both by Christians and those wishing to improve connection with the higher self.
The Crucifix
Whilst Easter was previously celebrated back in the times of the Saxons, The story of Jesus resurrection plays a huge part despite controversy over the dates matching up the events leading to and following the resurrection are the perfect metaphor for the renewal of life and light taking over the darkness that has cast its shadow over the earth for too long. It shows us how to come out of Winter with a much better outlook, we are stronger with the power of the sun fuelling our growth.
The crucifix also shows us how Jesus sacrificed himself on the cross, taking his pain and suffering from this physical realm and transcending into a spiritual one for a life in eternity, leading the path for us all to work through faith to transcend into these realms.
