Moving On From The Past

Written by  | 30th November 2015

The past can haunt us, or it can be a closed door that we've turned our back on, planning never to re-visit it, but the past is what made us who we are today. Rather than ignoring the past, if possible it is better, healthier, to accept it (or at least acknowledge that it happened), deal with any outstanding issues, and then move on from it feeling more in control. You want to be in control of yourself, rather than ghosts from the past pulling your strings.

Now is the time to take off your mask, to show the world who you really are, whether other people approve or not. Is it right to act in a certain way because other people expect it of you, or should you be true to yourself? Obviously, there are certain social conventions we need to follow, and much as we may want to tell our boss what to do with their job, in reality we probably need to think twice before saying this as we still need to put food on the table. What I'm talking about here is allowing yourself to be who you are, whoever that person may be. You don't have to "fit in" or follow the crowd if you don't want to. Try not to give in to peer pressure if it doesn't feel right to you. This doesn't mean you have to against other people, rather just be yourself, and maybe just be "different."

It can be hard to move on, to make changes. It is so much easier to stay in the same routine, even if this means you feel stuck in a rut. Climbing out of this rut can take hard work and effort, and it won't be until after you have done it that you will know if it was worth it or not. Is this a chance worth taking? I think so. Stay as you are and you will always be wondering "what if..?" Isn't it better to say "I did...." or "I tried...?” It is only by doing this that you can find out what you do and don't like. Even if things don't work out the way you'd planned, as least you did it.

So, are you ready to leave the past behind and to move forward? This can take time, but don't give up hope, it can be done. Re-discover who you are and what you like doing if necessary. Try a new hobby; join a new club, read new books. Do something you've always wanted to but were afraid to try.

Grab the future with both hands, thank the past for its lessons, and take your next step forward.
